Brand Audit of Low Value Plastics in Thiruvananthapuram – Campaign Poster

Low value plastic packing materials – carry bags, pouches, disposable consumables, containers etc – are not viable for recycling hence it is discarded by the informal sector. These materials often orphaned and ends up in open fire, drains, waterbodies and sea.  Thanal, with the support of GAIA and Break Free From Plastics campaign tried a brand audit to understand the nature, quantity of these materials and the burden of these materials on existing solid waste management system.  Thanal collaborated with Green Army – a network of students and youth volunteers in Thiruvananthapuram and colleced samples from the city to do an exhaustive analysis. The report have been submitted with recommendations to the Hon’ble Mayor of the City on 5th June 2018.

Attitude of Waste Managers and the Challenges faced by them – A study report

Health Inspectors and Junior Health Inspectors of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation who were managing the decentralized solid waste management systems were interviewed to know their perceptions on centralised solid waste management which they practiced earlier, the current waste management system and the transition period. It was done as part of course work of MSW by Ms. Alka Bastin of Marian College Kuttikkanam.

Behaviour Study: Shift from Centralised to Decentralised waste management at households

This study is conducted to analyse the change in the attitude of households when they shifted from centralised to decentralised waste management system. The study conducted in households situated in different parts of Thiruvananthapuram namely Shasthamangalam, Chacka, Manacaud, Vanjiyoor, and Thycadu.

The study was conducted by Mr Tom Joy as part of MSW Course work at Marian College, Kuttikanam. The study reflects the observations of Mr Tom Joy during the survey. The study was guided by Thanal.

Carbon Neutral Meenangadi: Assessment & Recomendations

The purpose of this project is to propose sector-wise adaptation and mitigation strategies todevelop Meenangadi Panchayat of Wayanad district in Kerala as a ‘Carbon Neutral Panchayat’by carrying out a carbon emission and sequestration analysis in the sectors of Transportation,Energy, Waste, Livestock and AFOLU (Agriculture, Forests and Other Land Use). The conceptof ‘Carbon Neutral Community’ puts forth the notions of zero carbon development and food- energy self-sufficiency at local government level.

The estimate shows that there was excess of carbon emissions (Surplus of total emissions over total sequestrationin terms CO2Eq) of 11,412.57 tonnes of CO2Eq in 2016-17.
