Innovative Conflict Mitigation through the Triple-Layer Bio-Fence

Human–wildlife conflict is one of the biggest challenges faced by communities living along the forest fringes. Frequent crop damage caused by elephants and other wild animals threatens agricultural livelihoods, food security, and the economic stability of farming families. Conventional barriers are often expensive, difficult to maintain, or harmful to wildlife, creating the need for solutions that protect both people and nature.

Vanamithram was developed as a nature-based approach to reduce human–wildlife conflict while strengthening ecological resilience. At the heart of the initiative is the Triple-Layer Bio-Fence, an innovative, non-lethal system that combines acoustic and light-based deterrent units (Anider technology), honeybee fencing, and a living barrier of lime plants. Together, these create a natural protective buffer that discourages wildlife intrusion without relying on harmful electric fencing or other destructive barriers.

Beyond protecting farms, the initiative transforms the bio-fence into a productive landscape. Honeybee colonies support natural pollination while generating income through honey production, and lime cultivation provides an additional source of livelihood as the living fence matures. By reducing crop losses and protecting agricultural land, the project enables farming communities to safeguard their livelihoods while promoting biodiversity and long-term ecological resilience.

Expected Outcomes

  • Reduced human–wildlife conflict through an innovative, non-lethal bio-fencing system.
  • Lower crop losses and improved livelihood security for farming communities.
  • Additional income through honey production and lime cultivation integrated within the bio-fence.
  • Improved pollinator conservation and strengthened local biodiversity.
  • A sustainable, community-led model that balances conservation with rural livelihoods.
