Jeevanam - Utensil Bank

Jeevanam – Utensil Bank inauguration: Promoting Sustainable Celebrations Through Reuse

Project Overview

The Jeevanam Utensil Bank is a community-led initiative implemented by Thanal with CSR support from RWDI to promote sustainable celebrations and reduce dependence on single-use plastics and disposable tableware.

Events, festivals, and social gatherings often generate large quantities of waste through the use of disposable plates, cups, and serving materials. Jeevanam addresses this challenge by providing reusable utensils and related equipment on a rental basis, enabling households, institutions, and event organizers to adopt environmentally responsible alternatives without compromising convenience.

The initiative is managed by the Keerthi Self-Help Group (SHG) of Cherukara Unnathi in Kulathupuzha. Beyond reducing waste and encouraging a culture of reuse, the project also creates livelihood opportunities for local communities by supporting a community-managed enterprise model. Through this approach, Jeevanam contributes to environmental protection, responsible consumption, and local economic development, demonstrating how practical solutions can create lasting social and ecological impact.
