Plastic Litter Study Final Report
Plastics in the ocean is a global concern not just because of its impact on ecosystems but on economy dependent upon resources from the ocean. The coastline is a corridor of exchange of life between two entirely different ecosystems – ocean and land. Characteristics of aquatic eco system and land ecosystem merges on this belt. Presence of plastic litter on coast is an index on pollution especially for this ecologically sensitive zone. Zero Waste & Climate Action team of Thanal conducted the study to develop plastic litter index for the coast of Kerala. Plastic litter samples were collected from 59 locations along the coast at regular intervals of 10 kilometre. Collected samples were analysed on the basis of type of plastic and on the nature of utility of the product. The study finds that 1.66 pieces of plastic is present in every square meter of beach along the coast of Kerala. Index value in terms of weight of plastic is calculated to be 10.31grams per square meter. 17 crore plastic pieces weighing 1057 tonnes is estimated to be present along the Intertidal Zone of Kerala.
Plastic Task Force
Plastic Task Force is envisaged as a platform for youth to get engaged into actions to prevent plastics in the ocean. 200 volunteers selected from 9 districts of Kerala will form PTF. The aim is to make awareness in communities in the cities along the coast to prevent littering. This group will be organizing regular clean ups in all the coastal districts of Kerala as well as will be conducting plastic litter study and mass campaigns.
PTF will be launched on 19th of August 2019 at Sanghumugham beach at 5.30pm. The honourable Mayor Adv V K Prasanth will inaugurate the first Plastic Task Force of Kerala.
Commodification of Nature and Knowledge – The TBGRI – Kani Deal in Kerala
commodification-of-nature-and-knowledge-the-tbgri-kani-deal-in-kerala
The purpose of this project is to propose sector-wise adaptation and mitigation strategies to develop Meenangadi Panchayat of Wayanad district in Kerala as a ‘Carbon Neutral Panchayat’by carrying out a carbon emission and sequestration analysis in the sectors of Transportation, Energy, Waste, Livestock and AFOLU (Agriculture, Forests and Other Land Use). The concept of ‘Carbon Neutral Community’ puts forth the notions of zero-carbon development and food- energy self-sufficiency at the local government level.
The estimate shows that there was an excess of carbon emissions (Surplus of total emissions over total sequestration in terms of CO2Eq) of 11,412.57 tonnes of CO2Eq in 2016-17.
