Climate Action

Climate change stands as one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with its impacts reverberating across every corner of the globe. The phenomenon, driven predominantly by human activities such as deforestation, reliance on fossil fuels, and intensive agricultural practices, has triggered unprecedented shifts in the Earth’s climate systems. While the planet’s climate has naturally fluctuated over millennia, the current rate of change is unparalleled, with scientific evidence unequivocally attributing this trend to human-induced factors.

Since the onset of the First Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere has escalated dramatically. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and other pollutants trap heat energy, resulting in the greenhouse effect and subsequent global warming. This uptick in global temperatures, exceeding 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels, spells dire consequences for ecosystems worldwide. The ramifications include melting glaciers, rising sea levels, disrupted weather patterns, and increased frequency of extreme events like storms, droughts, and heatwaves.

Thanal recognizes the urgent need to address climate change, spearheading initiatives aimed at mitigating its impacts and fostering resilience in vulnerable communities. One such endeavour is the Carbon Neutral Meenangadi project, situated in Kerala’s Wayanad district. This pioneering initiative has garnered recognition, including the prestigious Carbon Neutral Vishesh Panchayat Puraskar from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, underscoring its effectiveness in combating climate change at the grassroots level.

In tandem with its efforts to promote carbon neutrality, Thanal prioritizes climate education and awareness-building. Understanding the pivotal role of knowledge dissemination in driving behavioral change, the organization is establishing a Climate Accelerator Learning Lab in Meenangadi. This educational hub will serve as a focal point for training programs, workshops, and community engagement initiatives, aimed at instilling sustainable practices in agriculture, livelihoods, and everyday activities.
Kerala, with its unique socio-economic and environmental landscape, faces heightened vulnerability to climate change impacts. The state’s dependence on climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture, fisheries, and forests, coupled with its dense population and fragile ecosystems, accentuates its susceptibility to climate-related hazards. Recent catastrophic events, such as the devastating floods and landslides of 2018 and 2019, serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for climate-resilient development strategies.

While achieving carbon neutrality poses a formidable challenge, Kerala’s robust decentralized governance system presents a strategic opportunity for local-level interventions. Thanal advocates for climate-resilient development at the grassroots level, leveraging the state’s strong network of local self-government bodies to implement transformative measures. By empowering communities to adapt to climate change and adopt low-carbon practices, we strive to build resilience and secure a sustainable future for Kerala and beyond.

In the face of a rapidly changing climate, urgent and concerted action is imperative. Thanal’s holistic approach to climate advocacy encompasses mitigation, adaptation, and education, reflecting our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the planet for future generations. Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, Thanal endeavours to pave the way towards a greener, more resilient world, where communities thrive in harmony with nature.

The Carbon Neutral Meenangadi project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the Meenangadi Panchayat through sustainable practices and community participation. The project focuses on conservation efforts, waste management, reforestation, and promoting the use of renewable energy. By engaging local residents and supporting eco-friendly livelihoods, Meenangadi is working toward becoming a model for carbon neutrality.
